Here, we explain what makes a great Mexican restaurant and then give the ten specific reasons why we were voted the Best Mexican Restaurant on Hilton Head Island.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT MEXICAN RESTAURANT?
THE BEST CLASSIC MEXICAN DISHES
When you ask most people what their favorite Mexican dish is, most will respond with classics such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, or fajitas. They’re classics for a reason: they’re delicious and people love them.
As such, it is vital for a Mexican restaurant to offer a great lineup of classic dishes. Starting on the appetizer menu, we have guacamole, nachos, ceviche. We also have an entire section of the menu dedicated to tacos. Burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and fajitas also have their own ample real estate on the menu.
OUR CREATIVE MEXICAN CUISINE OPTIONS
While classic Mexican dishes are vital to the menu, it’s also nice to veer into creative territory once in a while.
For those that want to try a different flavor, things like our Asian Pork Belly tacos, Buffalo Cauliflower tacos, Osso Bucco and Surf & Turf fajitas offer some exciting and delicious variety to the menu.
HEALTHIER OPTIONS, FOR THE TIMES YOU WANT TO KEEP THINGS LIGHT
Try our Salsa Sampler, or Street Corn Salad. We have vegetarian options all across the menu. You can turn all our tacos into bowls with black beans and cilantro rice.
It should go without saying, but Mexican restaurants are a place where the freshness of the ingredients are of the utmost imortance. You can have all the classic and creative dishes you want on the menu, but if your ingredients aren’t top quality and your vegetables and herbs don’t taste like they’re just picked from the garden, your customers will know it. You can count on Holy Tequila for freshness that you can taste in every bite.
A great Mexican restaurant is a thing of beauty. At Holy Tequila we’ve taken the time and care to curate an incredible menu which couples tradition with innovation….with plenty of drink selections to wash it all down….and it’s all served in a unique and beautiful setting. We hope to see you soon.

THE BEST TACOS ON HILTON HEAD
The word “taco” roughly translates to “light lunch.” However, in America, tacos are devoured 24/7. Yes, devoured! Americans eat more than 4.5 billion tacos a year.
Let’s be honest, there are very few foods that are as good as tacos. Here at Holy Tequila we are all about all things taco. That is why you will find so many tacos on our menu. We have a cornucopia of flavors and tastes to meet every taco lover’s needs. As we like to say at Holy Tequila, “Live everyday like it’s Taco Tuesday.”
Did You Know? Some people in Mexico eat their tacos with grasshoppers, eggs, Korean barbecue, or tripe.
THE BEST TEQUILA SELECTION ON HILTON HEAD
When it comes to wine and spirits an “appellation” means that the beverage in question has a specific place of origin. Appellations are most associated with wine and spirits such as Champagne, Cognac, or Scotch. But tequila should be included on the list as well. To be officially called ‘tequila’ the spirit must be produced in one of only five regions in Mexico and only made from the blue agave plant. If you want to learn more about tequila go to the Holy Tequila blog and you will see that we have an article about margaritas which is loaded with tequila information.
If you love tequila, you’re in luck when you visit Holy Tequila. Our tequila menu boasts an incredible roster of offerings ranging from unaged Blanco tequila to Reposado, Anejo, and Especial varieties.

OUR WORLD CLASS MARGARITAS ARE THE BEST ON HHI
The world’s most expensive Margarita is very expensive. The 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar in Manhattan had the most expensive margarita in the world with their $1200 drink. The good news was that even though the drink came with a hefty price, those who ordered the cocktail could keep the Ralph Lauren hand-blown glass it came in and half of the money for the drink was donated to the charity of the drinker’s choice. Even still, that makes our Holy Tequila Margarita seem like a steal!
With a name like Holy Tequila you can be sure that we touch all the bases with our Margarita offerings. From classic to creative we have you covered. If you appreciate a quality, handcrafted Margarita then make Holt Tequila your destination.
THESE QUINTESSENTIAL QUESADILLAS ARE THE BEST YOU CAN GET ON HHI
For most people in America the entire reason to order a quesadilla is all the scrumptious melty cheese. But in parts of Mexico quesadillas do not rely heavily on cheese. The main ingredient might be something like beef, chicken, or pork. At Holy Tequila we know our customer’s taste buds and so it’s all comfort with our house cheese blend, bleu cheese crumbles, and Oaxaca gouda blend.
Did You Know? In the north of Mexico meat dishes are the specialty, while in the south vegetables and chicken are more widely used. Fish is common in areas around the sea, such as the state of Vera Cruz.
THE BEST ENCHILADAS ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
Ever wonder where the fun-to-say but funny-sounding word enchilada comes from? Turns out it comes from the Spanish word enchilada which means chili is added to an item. Over time, the word entered the public sphere. It’s likely the phrase, “the whole enchilada,” comes from the fact that the enchilada (the food) can be stuffed with any number of ingredients, and, therefore, can pack quite a bit into a very small unit.
If you try a Holy Tequila enchilada you will get “all of it” in flavor, texture, and taste. And (if you are old enough) the Nixon tapes during Watergate became “the whole enchilada.”
Don’t Sleep on the Enchiladas
BEST GUACAMOLE ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
While enjoying a night out with some Mexican cuisine, nothing is as refreshing as starting your meal out with an order of guacamole. Guacamole is one of the most popular types of Mexican appetizers. When a dip is so famous, it should come as no surprise that it has its own holiday. November 14th is actually National Guacamole Day. So make sure to come by on that day to celebrate.
Guacamole is one of the most popular dishes for Super Bowl Sunday. So popular, in fact, that 45 million avocados are consumed every Super Bowl Sunday. That’s a lot of dip.
Most people love guacamole and avocados but don’t know what it is they’re eating when they take a bite. Although they may look a little more like a vegetable thanks to the green color, avocados are a fruit. They are high in fat, but it’s the good-for-you monounsaturated fat your body needs. Avocados are also filled with fiber, potassium. and vitamins A,B,C and E….meaning they are really good for you.
Here at Holy Tequila you can always find guacamole on our menu, whether you enjoy it as an appetizer, or as a garnish on your meal, or both!
YOU’LL NEVER FIND BETTER FAJITAS ON HILTON HEAD
Are fajitas Mexican? Not entirely. Fajitas are Tex-Mex and so are chimichangas and nachos. It’s not to say they don’t taste good, but they are not traditionally Mexican. However, you can now find fajitas in Northern Mexico. These dishes originated in Texas, which was part of Mexico until the 19th century, so, historically, they do have Mexican roots.
Technically, the word “fajita” refers to the meat (for example, skirt steak) that’s sliced thin and grilled, then served with vegetables and tortillas on the side. But today, most people pile on all the fixings and meat on top of the tortillas, roll it up, and call it a fajita.
At Holy Tequila you can take a walk on the wild side with our Surf & Turf fajitas. One taste, and you won’t care where it is from.
Did you know? Mexican cowboys in Texas started eating fajitas while on the range where they would grill meat over an open fire.
The first printed recipe for fajitas was not until 1973 and fajitas were first on a menu in 1975 at Ninfa’s (still operating) restaurant in Houston, Texas.
THE BEST FIESTA HAPPY HOUR ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
Are you looking for the best Hilton Head Mexican Happy Hour around? Then there’s only one place to be. From 4 to 7pm you can enjoy delicious Mexican food at Holy Tequila. Best of all, though, is that we offer some absolutely great food options at Happy Hour, saving you money while treating you to some delicious food and drinks.
We’ve all tremulously uttered (or heard the phrase), “is Happy Hour….over?” But before you put in your last order, ever stop and wonder where Happy Hour began?
Happy Hour got its first associations with grown-up socializing in the Navy. There’s evidence of an official “Happy Hour” as early as 1924 on the U.S.S. Arkansas. These Happy Hours were a bit more innocent than our modern day variant, involving picture shows and boxing matches. Fast forward to the 70s and 80s and Happy Hour came to mean drink and food specials….an American institution.
Did You Know? Studies have stated that people living in Mexico are the second happiest people in the world. (Costa Rica is #1.) So it makes sense that the Best Mexican restaurant on Hilton Head would have the most festive and fun Happy Hour.
OUR CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION IS THE BEST ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
Here at Holy Tequila, if we could pick the one holiday we get most excited about it would be Cinco de Mayo. As an authentic Mexican restaurant we know a thing or two about Cinco de Mayo and about celebrating the holiday in style. We love Cinco de Mayo and we’re proud to say that we’re the best Hilton Head destination every May 5th for Cinco de Mayo. Check out our website for promotions, but be assured, you will have the time of your life.
Did You Know? Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is an annual celebration to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Pueblo on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoya.
STILL WANT MORE?
We will leave you with some of our favorite thoughts and puns about tacos.
- You can’t make everybody happy. You’re not a taco.
- Inhale tacos. Exhale Negativity.
- Somedays I eat salads and go to the gym. Some days I chase 10 tacos with a dozen shots of tequila. It’s called balance.
- I want someone to look at me the way I look at a taco.
- You can’t be sad with a taco in your hand.
